Mastering the Art of Adult Learning: The Foundation of Great Training
Welcome to the second edition of the Elevate Newsletter, where we dive into the fascinating world of adult learning. Last time, we introduced the Elevate Programme and gave you a taste of the transformational journey ahead. Now, we’re kicking off with a crucial topic: how adults learn best.
If you’ve ever wondered why some training sessions spark engagement while others fall flat, the answer lies in understanding adult learners. Unlike children, adults bring a wealth of experience, motivation, and expectations to the learning environment. When trainers tailor their approach to these unique characteristics, training moves beyond mere instruction—it becomes an experience.
Why Adult Learning is Different
Training adults isn’t the same as teaching kids. Traditional teaching methods, designed for young learners, often fail when applied to adults. Malcolm Knowles, the father of Andragogy (the science of adult learning), outlined six principles that make adult learners unique:
- Self-Directed Learning – Adults want control over their learning and resist passive, one-way instruction.
- Experience-Based Learning – They bring prior knowledge, and learning should connect to what they already know.
- Relevance & Immediate Application – They need to see why something matters and how to use it right now.
- Problem-Solving Orientation – They prefer practical, hands-on learning over theoretical lectures.
- Internal Motivation – Adults are driven by career growth, self-improvement, and personal goals.
- Respect for Time & Knowledge – They expect efficiency and don’t want their time wasted.
If trainers ignore these principles, learners disengage. But when we embrace them, training becomes engaging, interactive, and impactful.
How Trainers Can Apply These Principles
Great trainers don’t just deliver content—they facilitate learning experiences. Here are some practical ways to bring these principles to life in your training sessions:
- Make Learning Self-Directed – Give learners choices in how they engage. Let them explore, discuss, and apply content in ways that suit them.
- Build on Experience – Use real-world examples, case studies, and open discussions to help learners connect new information to past experiences.
- Keep It Relevant – Clearly explain how each concept benefits them right now in their jobs and lives.
- Use Interactive Methods – Swap passive lectures for group discussions, problem-solving exercises, and scenario-based training.
- Respect Their Time – Make training efficient and engaging. Cut unnecessary fluff and focus on high-impact content.
- Encourage Reflection – Ask learners: “How will you use this tomorrow?” When they verbalise application, retention skyrockets.
Expert Insight: Why Andragogy Matters
“Adults bring experience to training, so they don’t want to be talked at—they want to be engaged. The best trainers facilitate rather than dictate.”
Malcolm Knowles, Father of Andragogy
