Unlocking Learning Styles: How to Reach Every Type of Learner
Welcome to the third edition of the Elevate Newsletter! In our last issue, we explored the science of adult learning and why traditional methods often fail. Now, let’s take it a step further and discover how learning styles shape the way adults absorb and retain knowledge.
If you’ve ever noticed that some learners love diagrams, others need to hear things out loud, and some learn best by doing, you’re already seeing learning styles in action. As trainers, our job isn’t just to teach—it’s to reach every learner effectively.
The Four Learning Styles (VARK Model)
Neil Fleming’s VARK Model identifies four primary ways people take in information:
- Visual Learners – Think in pictures and prefer charts, diagrams, and color-coded notes.
- Auditory Learners – Absorb information through listening, discussions, and verbal explanations.
- Reading/Writing Learners – Learn best from text-based content, manuals, and note-taking.
- Kinesthetic Learners – Need hands-on experience, real-world applications, and movement to retain information.
When trainers tailor content to different learning styles, engagement skyrockets!

How to Adapt Your Training for Every Learner
Want to boost engagement and retention? Use a multi-sensory approach to cater to all four learning styles:
- For Visual Learners – Use slides with strong visuals, flowcharts, and color-coded notes.
- For Auditory Learners – Incorporate storytelling, discussions, and Q&A sessions.
- For Reading/Writing Learners – Provide written summaries, workbooks, and note-taking opportunities.
- For Kinesthetic Learners – Integrate role-plays, hands-on exercises, and real-world problem-solving.
Pro Tip
A single session should blend multiple methods to engage all learners. A mix of visuals, discussions, activities, and text-based content ensures no one is left behind.
Practical Exercise: The Training Redesign Challenge
Take a current training session you deliver and redesign it to incorporate all four learning styles. Ask yourself:
How can I add more visuals?Where can I integrate discussion and verbal interaction? What text-based resources can I provide? How can I make this session more hands-on?
Try this, and you’ll see engagement soar in your next session!
Next Time: The Power of Storytelling in Training
Stories aren’t just for bedtime—they’re one of the most powerful tools in a trainer’s toolkit! In our next edition, we’ll explore how storytelling enhances learning, improves retention, and makes training unforgettable.
